Make the Maisie Bag your Bag for Life
From Friday 21st May the 5p charge for single-use plastic bags doubles to 10p and will apply to all businesses across the UK. The 5p charge for single-use plastic carrier bags was introduced in 2016 and since it launched in supermarkets their usage dropped by an incredible 95% with the average person in England now buying just four single-use bags a year compared to a whopping 140 in 2014!
The UK Plastics Pact brings together businesses from across the UK and its four targets for 2025 include:
- Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (reuse) delivery model.
- 100% of plastics packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
- 70% of plastics packaging is effectively recycled or composted.
- 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.
This is another welcome and essential step to keep reducing our plastic use although Ocean Crusaders estimates that shoppers worldwide are still using approximately 500 billion single-use plastic bags per year. Sadly, they end up in landfills where it takes 1000 years for a plastic bag to degrade and also in our oceans which are extremely dangerous to its wildlife as they are mistaken for food. A review by the Australian government science agency CSIO found the plastic was responsible for killing animals acoss 80 different species when ingested.
We all need to continue to play our part and remember our reusable bags but it is only human to forget them sometimes, that is why our Masie Bucket Bag is the perfect bag for being on the go. The deep profile means there is a space to fit in what you need from your lunchbox to some last-minute bits from the supermarket. Our Masie Bag is handmade from ethically sourced leather with a removable shoulder strap so it can be styled to suit you.
